Earlier Thursday Air Algérie Flight 5017 lost contact with authorities over Mali with over 110 passengers and 6 crew members aboard. French Minister of Transportation confirmed the reports from the Algerian News Agency that reported earlier that  Air Algérie Flight 5017 fell off the radar after 50 minutes of take off about 1:55 A.M. local time. The plane was flying from Ouagadougou largest city and capital of small Western African country, Burkina Faso, and it was headed to Algiers, Algeria.

Earlier French Minister of Transportation Frédéric Cuvillier told reporters the plane disappeared over Northern Mali. It is too early to say the reason of the tragedy but as always some of the western media outlets are reporting in utter ignorance that “Islamic Militants” in Mali have hit the plane. The fact is that they are not technically advance enough to have missiles that can take out a passenger plane flying at higher altitudes. There is another report from a weather channel that speculates that the plane may have got caught in a severe storm that was lingering over Mali last night. But again it is too early to get to a conclusion.

Airport Ouagadougou Burkina FasoThis is the third air line tragedy in a single month. Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 was shot down over Ukraine last week and more than 295 passengers died. No one claimed responsibility to the hideous crime. Yesterday TransAsia Airways plane crashed in a typhoon-hit Taiwan. This year is turning out to be the worst year in air travel history.

The plane is a Boieng MD 83 which is a  medium-range, single-aisle commercial jet airliners that has a maximum capacity of 172 passengers. The plane went missing about 12 hours ago and it is highly unlikely that it is still in the air because Boeing MD-80 series is a series of small to medium-range jetliners that usually don’t have the fuel and structural capabilities to go long distances. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all the victims’ families.
